In the fight for women's suffrage, US socialists declared the last Sunday of February each year a national day of action in 1908 and celebrated it for the first time in 1909. At that time, the focus was on the demand for women's rights, especially, as mentioned, for women's suffrage. The motto became "Out with women's suffrage!". But also the demand for better working conditions for working women.

On February 28, the award ceremony of "Talk of Fem" - a women's prize of the city of Linz will take place.

This year, the FrauenFilmTage will take place from February 28 to March 7 at the Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus.

On March 8, International Women's Day, demonstrations for women and LGBTQ rights will take place in Linz and numerous other cities in Austria.

In memory of the Linz architect, artist and FIFTITU% co-founder Gabriele Heidecker, the Green Party of Linz awards the Gabriele Heidecker Prize to outstanding female artists and artist collectives with a connection to Linz. The Green Linz Women's Art Prize has been awarded biennially since 2017, is endowed with EUR 10,000 and is donated by Eva Schobesberger.
The Women's Art Prize can still be submitted until February 28, 2019.

On February 14, a resolution on the rights of intersex people was adopted for the first time in the European Parliament. It is a milestone for the intersex community and a stage victory as a long-needed step towards the protection of fundamental rights. A recent study from Germany shows that unconsented medical interventions on intersex children are still taking place.
The Verein intergeschlechtlicher Menschen Österreich (VIMÖ), the Plattform Intersex Österreich and the HOSI Salzburg are calling for comprehensive protection of the fundamental rights of intersex people in Austria and the EU.

The term "Gendersternchen" has been named Anglicism of the Year 2018 in Germany. The "gender star", a typographical symbol that includes people with a different gender identity when referring to people, represents "a clear enrichment of the German vocabulary", the jury said in its statement - as reported by DieStandard and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
