To date, there has been no comprehensive study on sex work in Austria. The publication "Sex Work in Austria - A Policy Field between Pragmatism, Moralization and Resistance" is the result of three years of research in which prostitution policy and its effects on the practice of sex work were examined in detail from the various perspectives of sex workers, NGOs, administration, the executive and politics.

The focus is on 85 interviews with sex workers, which provide information about migration processes, routes into sex work and working conditions.

The author Helga Amesberger, who works at the Institute for Conflict Research in Vienna, and Gergana Mineva, representative of maiz, Autonomous Centre of and for Migrant Women, talk about the publication "Sex Work in Austria: A Political Field between Pragmatism, Moralization and Resistance". It was published in 2014 by New Academic Press in Vienna.

The Bern-based Radio Rabe - has not only painted the black bird on its flag, but has also taken up the cause of anti-sexism as well as anti-racism. But as is the case with the relationship between theory and practice, they also have to take themselves by the nose time and again. Just recently, the information editor Karin Bachmann was announced as a sexy news lady by a fellow presenter. Was this sexist? Or simply a nice compliment? Rabe poses the question.

NEWS

1. The new Female Pressure campaign with pictures of women is inspired by Björk's interview with US magazine "Pitchfork", in which she points out the lack of visibility of women working in the studio. On the Female Pressure Tumblr blog they are - the missing images - sent in by female musicians, DJs and producers from around the world. A visual catalog of diversity, a great collective action. These are not promotional images, but images from the lives of women at work in the studio. So commonplace and yet so rarely seen. More photos arrive every day. The blog is updated hourly. Contributions welcome!

2 In the EU, women still earn on average 16.4 percent less than men. However, the pay gap is slowly narrowing. This is according to the latest figures from Eurostat. They compare standardized average gross hourly wages in the private sector - regardless of the occupation. According to these figures, the average pay gap between women and men fell from 17.3 percent in 2008 to 16.4 percent in 2013.

The smallest differences in gross hourly earnings in 2013 were in Slovenia (3.2 percent), Malta (5.1 percent), Poland (6.4 percent) and Italy (7.3 percent). The biggest pay gap was in Estonia (almost 30 percent) and Austria (23 percent).

3. In Algeria, domestic violence becomes a criminal offense punishable by 20 years in prison. Parliament has passed a law to this effect. According to the law, violent husbands must expect a prison sentence of between one and 20 years if they injure their wives. If the wife dies, she faces life imprisonment. Husbands who access their wives' assets without their consent face six months to two years in prison. The law also criminalizes the harassment of women in public spaces. There is a threat of fines or short prison sentences.

The law has been criticized by Algerian women's organizations and Amnesty International. A clause in the new law allows women to forgive a perpetrator. In such a case, proceedings can be dropped in minor cases and the sentence reduced in serious cases. "This provision not only ignores the power relationship between women and men, but also exposes women to the risk of being forced to withdraw their complaint through violence and blackmail," says Amnesty.
