How free are art and culture? In times of Covid-19 and an upswing in populist tendencies in Austria and across Europe, and in the midst of a neoliberal economic system, the scope for art and culture is shifting. Precarious structures and marginalization are narrowing these spaces even further.
However, artistic freedom can only be secured if production, distribution and participation are possible, freed from pressure and influence - this also includes the social and economic security of artists and cultural workers.
Together with artists, cultural professionals and interested parties, a space for exchange is to be created in order to strengthen and expand alliances and develop strategies to strengthen artistic freedom. The discussions will revolve around key questions:
What forms of restrictions on artistic freedom do we currently encounter in Austria?
How can we make these visible and show solidarity with each other?
What joint countermeasures with a strong impact can we take?

Pulse lecture on unruly tactics
Art, power, freedom by Fahim Amir

In his keynote speech, philosopher Fahim Amir takes a critical look at the concept of freedom. Because: Whose freedom are we talking about anyway? Is the understanding of "artistic freedom" in the traditional sense an appointment of old white men? What could a new, feminist understanding look like?
